James Oglethorpe (1696-1785)
James Oglethorpe was a visionary, social reformer, and military leader. James Oglethorpe was also able to establish Georgia as a colony because of his initiatives in England. Then in 1733, he had led an expedition with colonists to Savanna. After that, James Oglethorpe stayed in Georgia for the next decade directing both the economic and political development of the colony. He also defended the area militarily and began to recruit many settlers throughout England and other European countries.
