The Appalachian Mountains was formed due to a collision and separation of tectonic plates. It goes over a distance of 1,600 miles. The Appalachian Mountains also ranges across 14 states. It is also the oldest chain of mountains on the North American continent. The name Appalachian comes from the Indian tribe Apalachees which is an Indian tribe that used to inhabit the area.
